Some Arsenal fans said they wanted Benitez as their next boss after their defeat to Newcastle

Newcastle United boss Benitez was linked with the Gunners job after he masterminded the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Wenger’s side at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The result – which leaves Arsenal 13 points adrift of the top four – only heaped more pressure on Wenger, who has one year remaining on his contract although there is expected to be a review of his position in the summer.
Former Gunner Paul Merson reacted with doubt when asked about the rumours on Monday, telling the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that Benitez’s methods would not suit Arsenal’s attack-focussed style of play.
But Murphy, who played under the Spanish coach at Liverpool , believes Benitez would be the perfect manager to get the Gunners back on track after years of underachieving.
“He [Benitez] is exactly what Arsenal need,†the former Anfield star said on the Jim White show.
“I heard Paul Merson talking on the Sports Breakfast, saying Arsenal fans want a certain style of play and want to see a team play expansive football …
“…but they do that now and they get murdered.
“I only worked with him [Benitez] briefly, but he was bang on it.
“He was all about: ‘This is what we’re going to do and this is how we’re going to do it’. You know exactly what you’re doing.
“He is a calm manager but he’s very assertive.
“You wouldn’t want to cross him, he’s got a real ruthlessness about him.â€
