Alan Stubbs has warned Everton they ‘can’t afford to get it wrong again’ after deciding to sack Sam Allardyce and begin searching for their third permanent manager in two years.

Allardyce was axed by Toffees chiefs on Wednesday , despite steering the club away from relegation and finishing the Premier League season in eighth place.

Former Watford boss Marco Silva is reportedly the frontrunner to replace him . The Portuguese was Everton’s first-choice to replace Ronald Koeman back in November but the Hornets blocked their approach… only to sack him themselves in January.

Whoever is appointed, Stubbs says they face a huge summer as they look to amend the mistakes Everton made in previous transfer windows, having had little to show for the almost £300million spent since Farhad Moshiri’s takeover.

Asked about Everton’s current situation, Stubbs told talkSPORT host Jim White: “I’m pretty sure they have someone in mind.

“I know Silva has been mentioned but obviously there’s till the situation with Watford and there’re not happy about how Everton dealt with that.

“I’d be absolutely astonished if Everton have not got somebody lined up to come in.

“We’ve seen how we got in wrong last time, with the timing of Koeman’s sacking and the money that was spent on signings.

“Everton cannot afford to get it wrong again. They need to have an enormous summer.

“They need to get the fans to turn up with an excitement and looking forward to watching the team again.”
