‘Goodison Park was a dull place to go under Sam Allardyce’ – Everton were right to sack manager, says Leon Osman

Leon Osman insists Everton were right to sack Sam Allardyce , as the former England boss had turned Goodison Park into ‘a dull place to go’.

Allardyce was sacked by the Toffees on Wednesday , just six months after signing an 18-month contract as manager.

While the decision has appeased their fans, who were unhappy with the team’s unexciting brand of football under the 63-year-old, Everton have come under-fire for axing a man who saved their season.

Both Allardyce and Moyes were sacked by their clubs on Wednesday

The Merseyside club were in danger of being sucked into a relegation battle when they sacked Ronald Koeman and hired Allardyce in November. He eventually led Everton to an eighth-placed finish to the Premier League campaign.

But former Toffees midfielder Osman believes the club were right to make the change at the end of the season, telling the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast : “If you take a step back and see what he actually did when he came in, yes you’d probably say it was harsh.

“He took us away from relegation and got us in the top half of the table. But we’re talking about a team that, at the start of the season, were considered to be pushing for the top six.

“But once Sam came in it just looked like we were a relegation team – there were no shots on target, there was no real action to get excited about. Goodison Park was a dull place to go.

Disgruntled Everton fans campaigned for Allardyce’s departure throughout the season

“Sam Allardyce has made a niche for himself for keeping teams in the Premier League, and you do that by getting results and keeping on picking up points no matter how that is.

“But he seemed to not want to come away from that at Everton, to try and build a team to play exciting football.

“He didn’t want to move away from this style of football that’s been successful for him.

“Everton have been relatively safe since Christmas and yet the football hasn’t improved and Sam has paid the price for that.”
