BIG AL’S VERDICT

Spurs made unwanted history on Thursday by becoming the first ever Premier League club not to bring in any new signings over the summer.

While there is a sense that ‘if it ain’t broke…’ – Spurs did manage to keep their strong starting XI intact – manager Mauricio Pochettino will surely be disappointed at this missed opportunity to close the gap on the Premier League title chasers.

With Tottenham poised to kick off a new era in their newly built, multi-million-pound stadium , Sports Breakfast host Brazil was keen for Spurs to push on and see their bright, young squad challenge for titles.

But instead, he fears their barren summer could be a signal of more trophy-less seasons to come.

Speaking on Friday morning, after the transfer window closed on Thursday night, He said: “With Tottenham’s first XI, they could take anyone on.

“But, when you look at what Liverpool and City have done [in the transfer window] and the points gap between City and Spurs last year – how are they going to close that?

“My worry is what happened to Arsenal when they moved from Highbury to the Emirates.

“Their focus was on ‘we need to get more punters in so we can compete’ – when was the last time Arsenal have competed?

“Arsenal fans have been shaking their heads saying, ‘I thought that’s why we moved, so we could bring in the best players’.

“They were blaming Wenger for not going out in the market, but then we heard the board weren’t giving him the money.

“I don’t want that to happen with Spurs, I want Spurs to add.

“People keep saying, ‘how are you going to get a top class striker if they know they’re not going to play every week because of Harry Kane?

“But that’s what you have to do. You need top quality players.

“What if Harry does his knee ligaments or gets a serious injury, what are Spurs going to do then?”
