Manchester United were offered the chance to sign England defender Harry Maguire for just £15million last summer, but turned it down.

The Leicester City star was one of the top centre-backs the Red Devils were chasing this summer, with the 25-year-old apparently been for the move to Old Trafford.

But their efforts to land Maguire were thwarted by the steadfast Foxes , who refused to sell following his breakout performances for the Three Lions at this summer’s World Cup.

United chiefs were reportedly put off by Leicester’s £75million valuation of the defender.

However, it has now been revealed the Red Devils could have signed Maguire for much less last summer, had the Premier League giants opted to bring him in over another defender they signed for double the price.

Leicester landed Maguire from Hull City last June in an initial £12million deal, which could rise to £17million.

But, according to the Daily Telegraph , he only joined the Foxes after Man United passed up the chance to bring him to Old Trafford for £15m.

Instead, manager Jose Mourinho signed Sweden international Victor Lindelof for £31 million.

The news comes after a frustrating end to the summer transfer window for Mourinho, who was desperate to sign a new centre-half but was ultimately left empty-handed.

United were linked with the likes of Maguire, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin and Barcolena’s Yerry Mina, but none of those pursuits came to fruition.

It has also been claimed the club were willing to spend a record-breaking £100m to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid on deadline day, only to be told the World Cup winner was not for sale.
